David Mancuso is arguably the single most influential individual in the development of the Dance music DJ, he does not consider himself a DJ. Alternatively, he considers himself a musical
host. However, without David Mancuso's concept of the spinner of records as musical host, it's possible the DJ's role in creating a Dance environment would not have occurred.
Nicky Siano launched the careers of Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles. He is the original Studio 54 DJ, and the first DJ to produce a record. In 1972 he opened The Gallery. Widely acknowledged as the instrumental figure in the creation of the modern cult of the dj.
Good friends Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles quickly became entranced by the early Dance music scene in Manhattan,
particularly parties at David Mancuso's Loft. The two became well known on the club circuit and worked their way into helping out DJ Nicky Siano with setup at The Gallery. Larry Levan also began to hang out at Continental Baths and obtain a regular DJ gig at the Baths'.
Frankie Knuckles got his start alongside Larry Levan at The Continental Baths,and as an eventual replacement. Larry Levan was influenced by Nicky Siano's eclectic style, and by The Loft's
David Mancuso, Modeled after David Mancuso's Loft parties, Larry Levan was offered a residency at the Paradise Garage, intended as a downtown facsimile of Studio 54 catering to an upscale white gay clientele, Larry Levan initially drew an improbable mix of streetwise blacks, Latinos, and punk rockers. Frankie Knuckles repeated the task at US Studios aka The Warehouse in Chicago and gave birth to the house music phenomenon.
These four individuals are
